Mechcommander 2 bad AI fix

If you’ve played this game a while you’ll notice the AI is severely crippling to the overall experience. Most of the time enemies are stuck in a walk allowing you to easily kite them away. To make matters worse they seem to be completely incapable of target switching and will often lock onto the first mech they see and stay locked until their die or you die.

These two AI defects make it extremely easy to kite away any class of mech by sending a bait mech and then just running it past the rest of your lance.

There are a few solutions.

  • (Highly recommended) Install the official mc2 patch. The patch contains a ton of features including badly needed weapon balancing (ballistic weapons take up less space, lrms do less damage, prices and recycle times overall tweaks). Most importantly it patches the data\missions\corebrain.abx file which I believe is responsible for the majority of the AI. After this patch enemies will target switch more readily and actually RUN. This can make even light mechs like the fire ant more useful to the npcs. Keep in mind this will make the game significantly harder! Payouts for objectives have also been reduced significantly so money isn’t unlimited like it was in vanilla. Prepare for a challenge.

  • Play the Mechcommander Omnitech mod instead. With the release of the MC2 source magicX has created a standalone game built on MC2 that is available for free with no DRM. It has a separate campaign, better AI as well as dozens of additional mechs and weapons. The mod also makes the game more like a battletech based game – weapons aren’t infinite and need to be purchased and can be destroyed. Same with mechwarriors.

Railroad Tycoon 3 startup crash Windows 10

Railroad Tycoon 3 has a few known compatibility issues with Windows 7, 8 and 10. The most common cause of startup crashes is the “Hardward T&L” setting that is enabled by default. Because you can’t open the game to disable it you’ll have to overwrite your config file (just be sure not to re-enable it in your game settings or you’ll have to do this again).

  1. Download the “Vista Fix” (aka modified engine.cfg):
Download link 1 <– Hawk and Badger (under “other unofficial patches”)
Download link 2 <– Local mirror
  2. Overwrite the engine.cfg with the downloaded version. The original engine.cfg is located in:
    Railroad Tycoon 3\Data\Configuration
If you installed the game through steam you can find this file in the following directory:
    steam\steamapps\common\Railroad Tycoon 3\Data\Configuration
  3. Restart the game

If you’ve followed the above steps and are still having issues with the Railroad Tycoon 3 startup crash on Windows 10, please post in the comments below. To increase your chances of a solution being found include as much detail as possible (which version of the game you’re running, what operating system you have, what video card you have and steps to reproduce the issue). Screenshots are also very useful!

Skype/Hangouts mute all other sound Windows 10 + Bluetooth headset

Note this tutorial is specifically for Bluetooth headset MDR-XB950BT on Windows 10. Other BT headsets may react differently to the following changes so proceed at your own risk!

A few weeks ago I updated from Windows 7 to Windows 10 and noticed that my bluetooth headset (MDR-XB950BT) could no longer listen to PC sounds while on skype/hangouts calls.

After some more research I noticed that it had nothing to do with which programs I was running, in fact if I opened up the Control Panel > Hardware and Sound > Sound panel and clicked the Recording tab that would also mute background sounds so it seemed that any time the microphone was active sound was muted. After looking through tons of forum threads this is what ended up working for me:

  1. Under Control Panel > Hardware and Sound > Sound > Communications make sure “Do nothing is selected” like so:
  2. Go to Control Panel > Programs > Programs and Features and uninstall WIDCOMM Bluetooth Software (or any other Bluetooth Driver software you had installed). For me I had this exact version:
WIDCOMM Bluetooth Software. Product Version: Product Language: /0409. Manufacturer:
  3. Restart Computer
  4. Download the latest Broadcomm Bluetooth driver for Windows 10 from here: and install it via the downloaded executable.
  5. Restart Computer.

Now when I’m in the Sound panel and click on Recording there’s slight sound pause but then the sound resumes at a lower quality (grainier) but I can still here PC sounds AND communicate! Hope that helps :)
